So, it was from these diverse perspectives and experiences that I decided to research and write the book-not just to describe what creates the wage gap today-but also, what can be done to eliminate it. And, with years of experience in corporations and on corporate boards of directors, I know what employers need to do. As a former public official, I know what public policy and government can and cannot do. Moreover, from 1993 to today, the wage gap has remained essentially unchanged.Īs an economist I wanted to examine the data underpinning the wage gap in depth. In short, all the reasons the wage gap supposedly existed were outdated-yet a 23-cent wage gap persisted. But, by the late 1990s, women were graduating from college at the same (even greater) rates than men women's paychecks were crucial to families many women, either divorced, separated, never married, or widowed, were the major providers for themselves and those who depended on them, and women were working almost as long and certainly as hard as men. When I started working full time, the gender wage gap was 40 cents! Throughout subsequent decades, I heard that women earned less than men because we were not as well educated, did not work as long or as hard as men, and that we really did not need as much money because husbands would support us. I was inspired to write Getting Even because I always assumed the gender wage gap would disappear during my working life. When Catherine Saxon, an American correspondent reporting on the war in Europe, is found murdered in her London digs, news of her death is concealed by British authorities. She was seeking peace in the hills of Darjeeling, but her sojourn is cut short when her stepmother summons her back to England. Four years after she set sail from England, leaving everything she most loved behind, Maisie Dobbs is making her way home, only to find herself in a dangerous place. Maisie, who has known these men since childhood and remembers Eddie fondly, is eager to help. When he is killed in a violent accident, the costers are sceptical about the cause of his death, and recruit Maisie Dobbs to investigate. To the costermongers of London, Eddie Pettit is simply a gentle soul with a near-magical gift for working with horses. As Maisie's inquiry reveals a possible link to the London underworld, so the country is bracing for a possible enemy invasion amid news of the British expeditionary force stranded along the French coast.Īpril, 1933. With Britons facing what has become known as the Bore War - nothing much seems to have happened yet - Maisie Dobbs is asked to investigate the disappearance of a local lad, a young apprentice craftsman working on a "hush-hush" government contract. A must-own for all readers of Lovecraftian and weird fiction. SECRET HOURS: This collection consists of several Lovecraftian tales, a “King in Yellow” story with a nod to Ramsey Campbell, and other haunting and unsettling stories. Where to begin with his work? I recommend starting with Secret Hours, The Narrator, and The San Veneficio Canon. “Michael Cisco is of a different kind and league from almost anyone writing today, and The Narrator is Cisco at his startling best.” – China Mieville I feel that Secret Hoursis a “must-own” for readers of Lovecraftian and weird fiction. It called to mind the stories of Thomas Ligotti - though I stress that these tales are not Ligotti pastiche. I remember reading Cisco’s short story collection Secret Hours years ago and being blown away by it. With that in mind, I’d like to call your attention to Michael Cisco. I’ve been told many times by Lovecraft eZine readers that I’ve introduced them to authors and books that they’ve really enjoyed, and wouldn’t have known about otherwise. Art by Tom Brown, for the story “Two Fragments” by Michael Cisco (in SECRET HOURS) Another one was the newest release by Kristin Higgins called In Your Dreams. I recently read Tessa Dare’s last novel, and it made me laugh a handful of times. The last book that made me laugh out loud was…A little known fact about me is that my favorite genre is historical romance. I wrote that scene in a closet at work during lunch and just completely teared up in that icky room hunched over my laptop. And it’s like I was right in the room with them. Life is pulling them in new directions, and their childhood friendship is over. They started as teenage best friends, and seven years later one of them is getting married, and they’re having a final chat before the wedding starts. But I was writing this scene that involves two characters that have shared four books together. The last book that made me cry was…This is so silly, but my own.
